Soil Series

Map showing locations of soil types within the Spring Mill Lake watershed.
Graph showing that 44 percent of the total watershed area is represented by Crider-Frederick silt loams and 32 percent is represented by Frederick-Crider silt loams.

Soil series maps for Lawrence and Orange Counties were incorporated into the GIS database. Nearly 76 percent of the Spring Mill Lake watershed is dominated by Crider-Frederick and Frederick-Crider silt loams. These soils are generally unsuited for cultivation of corn, soybeans, and small grain. The soil units are suited to growing trees and grasses and legumes for hay or pasture.

Runoff and erosion are main concerns where these soils are converted to hay or pasture. Erosion of these soils could contribute to accumulation of sediment in Spring Mill Lake.
