Geographic Information System Database

A Geographic Information System (GIS) database was compiled to assist investigators in illustrating and analyzing vast amounts of data. Individual modules called “coverages” contain the dye trace, soils type or series, and land use/land cover data. These coverages were combined with data for roads and railroads, lakes and streams, and county boundaries.

Map showing location of Spring Mill Lake watershed.

Results from the dye trace investigation were combined with U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps and a map showing ground water elevations to delineate the Spring Mill Lake watershed boundary and its subwatersheds. Pesticide and fertilizer application rates were approximated using average application rates for the state of Indiana.
