Project Information Sheet 2004-05

Clearinghouse integration with OpenGIS services

Funding Source:

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)

Period of Contract:

30 Sep 2003 to 30 Sep 2004

Status:

completed — Definition of status type

Project Director:

Richard T. Hill

Issue

The Indiana Geographic Information Council's IndianaMap Web site is missing fundamental metadata for public circulation. Also, noncompliance with OpenGIS Consortium standards is holding back the development of an Indiana statewide collection of distributed hosts.

Objective

The Indiana Geological Survey and Hamilton County, Indiana, will enable hosting of Web services based on the OpenGIS Consortium (OGC) standards, as part of the development of a statewide collection of distributed hosts. Also, the Indiana Geological Survey will provide metadata compliant with Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) standards to the Indiana Geographic Information Councils IndianaMap Web site, as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

Approach

The Indiana Geological Survey currently operates and maintains four map Web services for the interactive display of GIS data using ESRI ArcIMS v. 4.0.1 software. Hamilton County maintains a Web site having a number of online services, including an Online Map Room powered by Autodesk MapGuide. There is an OGC Web Mapping Standard for both ESRI and Autodesk map services. These OGC services will be integrated and configured into the respective Web servers. Application metadata and data set metadata will be created for these map services and uploaded to the Indiana Geographic Information Councils IndianaMap Web site, to be included in the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

Products

The Indiana Geological Survey and Hamilton County will develop OGC-compliant Web servers. Several hundred essential metadata files will be added to the Indiana Geographic Information Councils IndianaMap Web site.

Benefits

The Indiana Geological Survey and the Hamilton County government both have a strong history of serving digital data to the public. Upon completion of this project, these two agencies will have set in motion a process which is the start of developing a statewide collection of distributed hosts to provide digital data and metadata to the public using OpenGIS Consortium standards.
