Source-water assessment

Funding Source:

Indiana Department of Environmental Management

Period of Contract:

23 Mar 2001 to 22 Mar 2006

Status:

completed — Definition of status type

Project Director:

Greg A. Olyphant, Sally Letsinger, and Denver Harper

Issue

The state of Indiana, as part of the Source Water Protection Plan (SWAP), seeks to evaluate and assess the source-water sensitivity, susceptibility, and vulnerability of public ground-water supplies. The particular category of public water suppliers addressed in this study is referred to as "noncommunity, nontransient." This category predominantly includes small facilities such as schools and churches.

Objective

The objective of this project is to develop fact sheets for 650 individual, noncommunity, nontransient, public ground-water supplies throughout Indiana, as part of the Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP).

Approach

We will assess source-water susceptibility on the basis of: 1) The hydrogeologic sensitivity of the local area, and
2) The presence or absence of any contaminants of concern in the area. Hydrogeologic sensitivity will be evaluated from two separate but related calculations: vertical travel time and horizontal travel distance.

Products

Fact sheets will be developed for 650 individual, noncommunity, nontransient, public ground-water supplies throughout Indiana. The explanatory materials and individual fact sheets will be provided to the funding agency in both digital form and as paper pamphlets.

Benefits

The sensitivity, susceptibility, and vulnerability of source water to potential sources of contamination will be evaluated. This will provide noncommunity, nontransient, public ground-water suppliers (for example, schools and churches) with information that will assist in making appropriate decisions regarding protection of their water resources.
