Project Information Sheet 1999-07

A three-dimensional aquifer visualization and ground-water flow model in the upper reaches of Lake Michigan drainage basin, NW Indiana, and GIS for the Lake Michigan drainage basin in Indiana

Funding Source:

Indiana Department of Environmental Management and Indiana Geological Survey

Period of Contract:

1 May 1998 to 30 Apr 2000

Status:

completed — Definition of status type

Project Director:

Greg Olyphant

Issue

The protection of supplies of shallow ground water in the heavily industrialized and densely populated region of northwestern Indiana will require improved understanding of the distribution of aquifers in that area.

Objective

The purpose of this project was to organize existing information on northwestern Indiana hydrogeology into formats that will allow land-use and water-resource managers and governmental regulators easy access to such information and the ability to visualize the data.

Approach

We gathered and organized pertinent data, and developed computerized data sets and models for managers and regulators to visualize the distribution of shallow aquifers and flow of ground water in the watersheds of Trail Creek and the Little Calumet River.

Products

Results of this study were incorporated into the Lake Rim Web site on the Indiana Geological Survey Web site, from which interested users can download data: http://129.79.145.25/indmaps/ims/lakerimmo/lakerim_front.html

Benefits

This project provides an effective means of addressing the protection of ground water in the heavily industrialized Lake Rim Region of northwestern Indiana.
