Project Information Sheet 1999-18

Ground-water database

Funding Source:

Indiana Geological Survey

Status:

ongoing — Definition of status type

Project Director:

Tracy Branam

Issue

Understanding the quality of ground water in Indiana is important to responsible use of this resource. Baseline water-quality data is essential for recognizing polluted ground water and for setting appropriate protective standards.

Objective

The purpose of this project is to create a database containing all of the IGS ground-water quality records that are linked to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Water Well Record Database and can be used in geographic information system (GIS) applications.

Approach

We will import spreadsheet data into a Microsoft Access database, convert township-range coordinates into x-y locations, and add the IDNR reference number to each water-well record.

Products

The ground-water data set can be used in GIS applications.

Benefits

More than two-thirds of Indiana residents have ground water as their home-use or municipal water supply. This project provides a snapshot in time of the ambient water quality of major ground-water aquifers throughout Indiana.

Locations Affected:
