Project Information Sheet 1999-16

Evaluation of acid mine drainage seeps

Funding Source:

Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Reclamation

Period of Contract:

1 Sep 1997 to 31 Aug 1999

Status:

archived — Definition of status type

Project Director:

John B. Comer

Issue

Major river systems in southwestern Indiana continue to be degraded by acid runoff from abandoned mine lands. Restoring these riverine ecosystems requires continuing evaluation and appropriate implementation of a variety of acid abatement strategies.

Objective

The purpose of this project was to abate acid runoff from seeps that develop at abandoned mine land sites after reclamation.

Approach

We collected and analyzed water from selected seeps and evaluated each seep for application of anoxic limestone drain abatement technology.

Products

When the project was completed, the chemical analyses and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) was furnished to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources in a final report.

Benefits

These analyses will enhance coal-mine reclamation projects that improve the quality of water flowing from abandoned mines.

Locations Affected:

state
