Revised digital elevation model of Indiana

Funding Source:

Indiana Geological Survey and U.S. Geological Survey (Central Great Lakes Geologic Mapping Coalition)

Status:

completed — Definition of status type

Project Director:

Robin Rupp

Issue

The National Elevation Dataset for Indiana, produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, is a digital elevation model (DEM) that has a combination of Level 1 and Level 2 data. The Level 1 data are substandard to the Level 2 data, and appear to have noise in the topographic features.

Objective

The objective of this project was to create 30-meter DEMs using recently acquired digital line graph (DLG) data for the areas containing Level 1 data. The new DEMs were merged into the entire Indiana data set, replacing the Level 1 data.

Approach

The revised DEM data set was created using part of the U.S. National Elevation Dataset and newly created digital elevation models. DLG data was processed into DEMs using ArcInfo and served to replace 275 of the 710 7.5-minute topographic quadrangles within the Indiana part of the National Elevation Dataset.

Products

The revised DEM of Indiana, in ESRI Grid format, along with a brief report and metadata are available as an Indiana Geological Survey Open-File Study. See S.E. Brown, N.K. Bleuer, M. Dickson, C. Dintaman, J. Olejnik, and R. Rupp, 2004, Digital Elevation Model of Indiana, Revised, Indiana Geological Survey Open-File Study 04-01.

Benefits

The revised digital elevation model of Indiana is more useful in determining geologic features on the land surface and may be used to create improved map products in areas that were originally mapped using Level 1 technology. Determining elevations from the revised DEM is also more accurate than the original DEM.
