The protection of supplies of shallow ground water in the heavily industrialized and densely populated region of northwestern Indiana will require improved understanding of the distribution of aquifers in that area.
In this project, we organized existing information on hydrogeology into formats that will allow land-use and water-resource managers and governmental regulators to easily access and visualize such information.
We gathered and organized pertinent data, and developed computerized data sets and models that can be used by managers and regulators to visualize the distribution of shallow aquifers and flow of ground water in the watershed of the Grand Calumet River.
A three-dimensional ground-water flow model will be developed for the area. The results of this study can be accessed through the Lake Rim Web site (http://igs.indiana.edu/arcims/lrim/index.html), from which interested users can download audiovisual files that will dynamically illustrate the three-dimensional configurations of aquifers and flow of shallow ground water within the study area.
This ground-water flow model provides a means of instructing interested users with varied backgrounds how ground water moves through geologic material. It also provides decision makers with a valuable planning tool.
