The Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) has published a digital atlas of southwestern Indiana. More than 170 layers of geographic information are available in the digital atlas that can be used to construct unique maps for specific uses. Called a geographic information system, or GIS, the computer-based maps were compiled from a variety of sources, including federal and state agencies as well as IGS files and records, for the 26 counties of the southwestern part of the state.
The various map layers include information such as aerial photos, highways, railroads, numerous public buildings and structures (schools, dams), historical features, geology, mineral deposits, mines and quarries, water, oil and gas wells, and many others.
Indiana Geological Survey personnel worked closely with the engineering and environmental consulting firm Bernardin, Lochmueller, and Associates of Evansville to produce the GIS. The work was funded by a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).
Says Indiana Geological Survey Director John Steinmetz, “The digital atlas is a powerful planning tool for governmental agencies at all levels, as well as environmental groups, businesses, and industries. I would hope that it can be used to aid in attracting new businesses to Indiana, for it provides custom answers to many of the specific questions prospective developers ask.”
The digital atlas is being distributed to each of the county seat libraries in southwestern Indiana. Additionally, it is available for use on the IGS Web site through the Online Interactive Mapping and Geospatial Data Downloading site. Individual map layers may be downloaded at no cost, or the entire digital atlas may be purchased on a set of CD-ROMs for $90.00.
