The Indiana Geological Survey hosted a day-long exposition in the Indiana State House, Thursday, February 17. The expo provided legislators and other government officials the opportunity to learn how the Indiana Geological Survey is benefiting the quality of life and economic development of Indiana by providing unbiased and reliable earth science information through directed research, service, and education.
Dozens of visitors, including Governor Mitch Daniels, several state senators and representatives, and staff members from many state agencies, learned how the IGS serves the citizens, businesses, and government agencies throughout the Hoosier State. Through its many activities, including the application of computer technology to develop databases, geographic information systems, and Internet resources, the IGS assists in locating and evaluating mineral and energy resources, working with industry to reduce environmental risks to water and air, reclaiming land which has been mined, and identifying areas susceptible to natural geologic hazards, such as seismic risks and land subsidence. Visitors also learned how IGS efforts benefit natural resource industries, which contribute more than $1.3 billion annually to Indiana's economy, and how IGS staff actively participate in numerous education and public outreach activities.
