35th Annual Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. (HASTI) convention, Indianapolis, IN

02/02/2005 - 02/04/2005

The IGS had a strong presence at the 35th annual convention of the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers, Inc. at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis February 2-4, 2005. IGS staff conducted three workshops and hosted a booth with a large offering of earth science instructional materials. The booth provided more than 2,000 Indiana science teachers with the opportunity to obtain Indiana-specific earth science instructional resources and to learn about Indiana geology from experts.

A total of 20 IGS staff members directly participated in the convention and several others helped with preparations. Todd Thompson, Brian Keith, and John Rupp presented a three-hour workshop on how changes in Indiana geography have affected the formation of rocks and fossils. Erik Kvale and Jeff Kirby presented a 45-minute workshop about Indiana-specific earth science resources produced by the IGS, and Chris Walls (with a little help from Denver Harper and Jeff Kirby) presented a 45-minute workshop on the GIS Atlas for Indiana.

Six 10-minute demonstrations were presented in the booth featuring lessons that teachers can use in their classrooms. Tracy Branam, Erik Kvale, Todd Thompson, Amzie Wenning, and Jeff Kirby made the presentations.

Also, Erik Kvale was the featured speaker at the annual meeting of the Indiana Earth Science Teachers Association (IESTA), which was conducted as part of the convention. He presented a summary of his tidal rhythmites research. Erik also shared ideas about using the Modern and Ancient Tides poster and lesson plan with IESTA members during its Share-a-thon, which is an opportunity for members to share teaching ideas and resources with other members.

Other IGS staff members directly involved in the convention included Jay Arnold, John Day, Amy Foster, Dan Fox, Janis Fox, Ginny Haddan, Barb Hill, Chris James, Nelson Shaffer, Kim Sowder, and Amanda Wilson.

The convention provided IGS staff members with an opportunity to make a significant contribution toward fulfillment of the Indiana Geological Survey's mission to educate the people of Indiana about the geology of the state.
