This set includes labeled specimens of limestone, chert, sandstone, shale, dolomite, and gypsum, five smaller samples of each rock type, and a 21-page teacher's guide (on CD-ROM). The teacher's guide includes lessons and activities that focus on both developing content knowledge and process skills using a constructivist approach to learning science with the Learning Cycle method. Students will learn about common rocks found in Indiana, the geologic past of our state, and the rock cycle. They will also explore the properties of rocks, how scientists use these properties to classify them, and how society makes use of these rocks in our everyday lives based on their properties.

NOTE TO TEACHERS: The following educational materials have been designed to provide you with appropriate information and resources for teaching about rocks specifically as they relate to Indiana. Included are lesson ideas and assessments for use with the Samples of Indiana Rocks Set. These materials, which are identified in the lessons, should be inexpensive and easy for you to locate.
Children have a natural interest and curiousity about rocks. We hope this cirriculum will enable you to capitalize on that interest and engage your students in the study of geology in meaningful ways that promote development of science skills and concepts. Lessons are designed to progress from the concrete to the abstract, giving the children the firsthand experiences necessary to give meaning to new vocabulary that is introduced.
