This second edition is an expansion of the original 1996 version and is a comprehensive treatment of the geology of Cincinnati, Ohio and surrounding 11-county tri-state area. Following a short introduction and tribute to earlier geologic studies of the area, the publication is divided up into two major sections. The first, called Geologic Evolution, deals with the geologic history of the bedrock and glacial deposits of the region, often tying them continental scale events that influenced the local geology. The second section, called Living and Working with Our Inheritance, deals with the practicalities of a growing urban environment in this particular geologic setting. Topics include soils, groundwater, geologic hazards, and construction materials. There are ample photographs and illustrations throughout as well as references for further information and useful sidebars explaining some of the complex geologic concepts. A handy glossary of terms at is included in the back. The technical level is rated as high intermediate, but general interest readers can also find a lot of the information useful.

Keywords: Cincinnati, urban geology, ordovician, quaternary, surficial processes, history
