It is impossible to know how much of the data contained in the current PDMS was imported from the earlier versions, collectively referred to as the "Petroleum Database." Some important contributors to the earlier versions of the database include Chris Kohler, Darin Blunk, Gerald Carpenter, Jimmy Johnson, Nathan K. Eaton, Neal Schroeder, Paul Irwin, Robert Blakely, Steve Baedke,Michael A. O'Neal, and many hourly staff who entered data. Among those who have performed data entry are Andy Zuppann, Arlyn Keith, Becca Zuppann, Caitlin MacMillan, Derren Ficklen, Haley Abbott, Jeanne Carpenter, Jessica Packwood, Kyle Waldron, Mary Spanburg, Neil Whitmer, Nick Carr, Sandy Hahn, William Lewis, Zinta Smidchens, and others. Online_Linkage: http:\\igs.indiana.edu Description: Abstract: The Indiana Geological Survey's Petroleum Database Management System (PDMS) contains records related to the drilling of petroleum test wells, service wells, stratigraphic tests, and selected wells of other types. The PDMS consists of an interactive SQL database, interactive Help Menu, and interrelated tables and routines used by the Survey to manage the database and process documents and other information related to petroleum test wells. Some of these features are not displayed in the Public Version of the PDMS. The well records are accessed using a search menu that retrieves one or more well records. Individual wells are identified by a unique ID number. Each well is represented by one or more "well events" that document the well's history. Purpose: This data set was created to provide the Indiana Geological Survey and the public online access to information about petroleum-related wells drilled in Indiana. The dataset provides data suitable for use in geographic information systems. This data set is used by the Survey to display petroleum well locations on a new set of petroleum well maps called the IGS Petroleum Well Location Map Series (PWLMS). Section 2 DATA_QUALITY_INFORMATION Attribute_Accuracy: Attribute_Accuracy_Report: Numerous well data are stored in the PDMS. These data are derived from various sources, including reports and documents submitted to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas, field inspections by Indiana Geological Survey geologists, direct communications with well operators and lessees. Included are both reported and interpreted data. The PDMS Help File, which accompanies the PDMS, details every aspect of the PDMS and gives important qualifications regarding the completeness and accuracy of various types of data it contains. The public version of the PDMS is current subject to delays in entering data into the database. Such updates include records for new wells and for wells already contained in the PDMS for which additional information has been received. Although every effort is made to assure accuracy in the PDMS, its size and the fact that it includes data entered by many individuals at different times and for different projects makes it inevitable that errors exist. These errors are corrected as soon as they are discovered. We appreciate and depend on users of the PDMS to report any errors or problems they find. Logical_Consistency_Report: Not applicable Completeness_Report: The locations of many older wells (pre-1920s) are not accurately known. Additionally, nothing whatever is known for some 13,000 wells believed to have been drilled before 1905 in the Trenton Field of east-central Indiana, and these wells are not represented in the PDMS. Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy: Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Although well locations are normally staked by a registered surveyor, the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) has determined that the locations and elevations reported are occasionally erroneous. Consequently, in the 1950s, the IGS began checking the locations and elevations of new and older wells in the field. Most well locations in Indiana have been verified in the field. The field checking process is performed with a surveyor's altimeter and USGS topographic map, and is subject to the abilities of the geologist, the accuracy of the altimeter (generally in the range of 3 feet) and the reliability of the base elevations posted on the topographic map and of the map itself. A staked location that has been field checked is sometimes moved a short distance when the well is drilled, so the field checked location will be slightly inaccurate (generally less than 30 feet off). A location checked after a dry hole has been plugged is subject to some error, the amount depending on the situation. From 1991 to 1998, coordinates of well locations were tentatively determined for every well in Indiana for which a descriptive location was available. The determination of these coordinates involved a variety of methods, including digitizing from 1:24,000-scale topographic maps, batch processing software for converting descriptive locations to coordinates, and interactive on-screen measuring. Consequently, some well locations may be slightly mislocated. Coordinate locations in the PDMS are designated as 1) "Measured," if they have been measured on a computer screen using Digital Raster Graphics (Digital Topographic Maps). Measured locations are generally considered accurate to the limits of a 1:24,000-scale topographic map, roughly 50 feet. 2) "Imported," if they were determined by digitizing from a 1:24,000-scale topographic map or by batch processing software. All imported well locations in Indiana have been visually examined and compared with earlier manually spotted well location maps (paper) at a scale of 1 inch = 1 mile (1:63,360). Obvious discrepancies were corrected by measuring the well locations on-screen. However, for well locations in densely drilled areas, lesser accuracy is possible because wells may be too crowded to distinguish at a scale of 1 inch = 1 mile. 3) "GPS", a location with coordinates determined by Global Positioning Satellite. (Locations in the PDMS have not, as yet, been determined using GPS.) Vertical_Positional_Accuracy: Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report: Although well locations are normally staked by a registered surveyor, the IGS has determined that the locations and elevations reported are occasionally erroneous. Consequently, in the 1950s, the IGS began checking the locations and elevations of new and older wells in the field. Most well locations in Indiana have been verified in the field, however, the locations of many older wells (pre-1920s) are not accurately known. Well locations are checked in the field using a surveyor's altimeter and USGS topographic map, and their accuracy is subject to the abilities of the geologist, the accuracy of the altimeter (generally in the range of 3 feet), the reliability of the base elevations posted on the topographic map, the status of the location when checked (staked locations are sometimes moved a short distance by operators; locations checked after a dry hole has been plugged are subject to greater error). These two distinct field check status values have not yet been separated out in the PDMS for wells drilled prior to 2001. This will completed in the future. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Approximate Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: Well location and elevation have been reviewed using available sources, and its location is known to be approximately correct (within about 100 feet of the well), and its reported elevation is consistent with USGS topographic maps or other reliable sources. This category was added to the PDMS on October 1, 2003. Previously, such wells would have been termed "uncertain" by the IGS, which has led to some confusion. Wells drilled prior to this date have not been systematically updated in the PDMS. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Uncertain Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: The new meaning for the term "uncertain," for wells processed since October 1, 2003, signifies wells for which a location description has been received, but its description was not sufficient to determine an approximately correct position (within about 100 feet more or less of its actual position). For example, the well may be known to be located in the NW quarter of a section, but nothing more accurate is known. Historically, the IGS term "uncertain" included any well location that was not accurately known, in other words, both of the new designations, "uncertain" and "approximate" would fall within the old usage of the old term "uncertain." No attempt has been made to change the field check status of wells processed before October 1, 2003. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Attribute: FieldName Attribute_Label: Field Name Attribute_Definition: Name of the currently defined petroleum field in which the well is located. Former field names are not identified in the PDMS at this time. FieldName is not shown in the PDMS if the outline of the field is dependent on a confidential well event. In such cases, the well is given a "new field name" in the PostDrill Subtable, which is hidden in the public version of the PDMS for confidential well events. All well spots in Indiana have been visually examined and compared with earlier manually spotted well location maps at a scale of 1 inch = 1 mile. Obvious discrepancies have been corrected by measuring the well locations on-screen. However, for well locations in densely drilled areas, lesser accuracy is possible because wells may be too crowded to distinguish at a scale of 1 inch = 1 mile. The new logging may occur after an additional hole is drilled. Some operators, however, assign a different run number each time a new logging tool is run in the hole. Because of this conflicting terminology, the IGS intends to use whatever run number the operator places on the log. This practice was not established until mid-2002, so run numbers for some logs recorded in the PDMS are incorrect. Run numbers are not assigned to physical logs. Attribute_Definition_Source: None Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Permit_Number Attribute_Label: Permit Number Attribute_Definition: Number issued by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas to identify wells and/or well operations. Permit numbers have been used inconsistently over the years, rendering them of little use as unique well identifiers. Consequently, the IGS uses its own unique IGS ID to identify well locations. A single IGS ID may be associated with multiple permit numbers, but only one well (one surface location). Well events are assigned the permit number "0" by the IGS if, for any reason, they were not issued a permit number when the event occurred. Thousands of wells in Indiana drilled prior to 1937, the year petroleum drilling permits were first issued, fall into this category. A relatively small number of wells drilled since 1937 were also not issued permit numbers. Permit numbers may contain letters as well as numbers. Attribute_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Permit_Date Attribute_Label: Permit Date Attribute_Definition: The permit date is usually the date that a well permit was reported to the IGS by the Division of Oil Gas. This date may differ by a few days from the official date shown on the permit. The official permit date has not been systematically entered for wells drilled prior to 2001. For many well events, no specific date is known or is applicable. In such cases, no permit date is assigned and the data field is left blank. Attribute_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Completion_Date Attribute_Label: Completion Date Attribute_Definition: Completion date is the reported date that a well is made ready for production, operation, or is abandoned. Since a well event, as defined in the PDMS, may include other events related to permitting or other activities, the completion date is also used to indicate when the well event status was changed, thereby generating a new well event. In such cases, the completion date of the former event may be the same as the permit date for the second event. The date format used is mm/dd/yyyy. Wells that were reported as completed at an unspecified date in a certain year are assigned a date "01/01/yyyy," and a comment is added in the Comments Field stating that the exact month and date of completion are unknown. Similarly, if the month is known, but not the day, "mm/01/yyyy" is entered and a comment is added. If the year of completion is uncertain, the date "01/01/yyyy" is used, and a comment is added in the Comments Field of the Location Information Section stating that the completion year is uncertain. If the year of completion is unknown, no date is entered as the completion date, however, any limiting knowledge is added in the comments field (for example, "well drilled before 1928"). Such comments have not been systematically entered for wells in the database. Attribute_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Status Attribute_Label: Status Attribute_Definition: The state of a well event. For the most recent of a well's events, "status" is the most recent state of the event. For earlier well events, "status" is the state of the event at the time (permit date) a later well event was created. An exception exists when multiple boreholes are drilled from a single surface location. In such cases, each borehole is treated as a separate well event and more than one event may be active at a time. Attribute_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Attribute_Domain_Values: Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Abandoned Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: The abandonment of a previously completed well. These donations are entirely voluntary, since there are no rules requiring that records of coal borings be submitted to the state. While this information must remain confidential, IGS may use the knowledge gained as an aid to mapping and interpreting the subsurface. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Dry hole Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: D dry (nonproductive) and abandoned well. In the outdated manual record-keeping system formerly used by the IGS for petroleum well data, a "dry hole" was also listed as the "completion type" for some wells that would now be considered to have another status. Wells of the following status were all termed dry holes: non-potable water supply, other boring, potable water supply, salt water disposal, stratigraphic/structure test, coal test, temporarily abandoned, waste disposal. Although we now assign a specific status to these wells, instead of the generic "dry hole," the routines used to import these wells into the PDMS left the term "dry hole" as status for many wells. They have not been systematically converted to the new terminology, and therefore an undetermined number of well events in the PDMS may be listed with a status of dry hole, when, in fact, they should have a different (but always non-productive) status. In the outdated manual record- keeping system used by the IGS for petroleum well data, "gas" was listed as the "completion type" for wells that would now be considered termed "non-commercial gas." Since data on these wells have been imported into the PDMS, they were not systematically converted to the new terminology; therefore some well events prior to 2000 may be recorded in the PDMS as "gas" rather than non-commercial gas. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Location changed Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: Status is assigned to an event when its permitted location has been changed. The well event becomes inactive and a new event record is entered for the well, unless no other information about the well has changed (permit number, operator, lease, etc.), in which case a separate event is not necessary and the fact that the location has changed can be indicated in the Well Header Comment Field. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: New lease name or well number Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: A new lease name or well number has been reported by the operator. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Non-commercial gas Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: A non- commercial gas well is a well completed for home or farm use. Typically these are low- volume producers, though they may be economically beneficial to the owner. It is not uncommon for an operator to turn an unsuccessful well over to the landowner when the operator concludes that the well will not produce economical quantities of gas. For the purpose of assigning the a the well symbol in the Location Table, the PDMS treats a non- commercial gas status as a gas well. In older versions of the petroleum database, wells with non-commercial gas status were not categorized separately from commercial gas wells. The PDMS has not been systematically updated to revise this status of wells drilled before 2001. See discussion of gas storage versus observation wells under Status: Gas Storage. A well completed for the purpose of monitoring migration of fluids from a waste disposal well is also given the status of observation well. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Oil Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: A well completed as an oil producer. It is probably true that a number of wells, after having served as water injection wells, have been converted into oil wells, not because the well has become a commercially viable well. Operators sometimes make this conversion simply in anticipation of plugging the well, because regulations for plugging an oil well are less stringent than for plugging an injection well. Although, replacement for revoked permit may be the most recent well event, the symbol for the well would be determined by the most recent operation performed on the well. For example, if a well originally completed as a salt water disposal well (Event No. 1) were to have its permit revoked (Event No. 2), its subsequent event status would be replacement for revoked permit (Event No. 3). The symbol would still be SWD (salt water disposal). Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Revised permit Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: A new permit was issued to revise an active permit. It is known that some of the salt water disposal wells in the PDMS were probably completed as water injection (flood) wells, but were misreported as saltwater disposal wells. No systematic effort has been made to correct this problem. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Stratigraphic/structure test Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: Well drilled to gain geological information, generally to evaluate petroleum or mineral resources. It may be a shallow well to determine structural information to help decide whether deeper exploration is warranted, or it may be a hole (often small in diameter) to evaluate the stratigraphy in an area. It is not uncommon for operators to take out a permit for a stratigraphic/structure test, but to actually drill a normal exploration well. If the operator decides to complete the well for production, the well is then repermitted for that purpose. In such a case, the well event "stratigraphic/structure" test is terminated when the new permit is issued. If no information specific to drilling or completing the original hole exists, the status "stratigraphic/structure" test simply is changed to the new status. If information specific to drilling the "stratigraphic/structure" event exists, then a new well event must be added to accommodate the new status and the event's new information. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Temporarily abandoned Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: Well has not been completed for production, but has not been plugged. Before a well can be officially designated as temporarily abandoned, it must be tested for mechanical integrity. A permit for temporary abandonment is valid for a five-year period. The IGS may term a well "temporarily abandoned" even though it has not had that designation officially assigned by Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Oil and Gas. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Unknown Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: The status of the well at completion is unknown. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Waste disposal Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: Well drilled for disposal of commercial waste products. These wells were not drilled in conjunction with petroleum-related activities, however, they may be deep wells, and therefore, may be of great interest to those searching for hydrocarbon resources. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Water injection (flood) Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: A well completed for the purpose of injecting water into a reservoir to enhance production from other nearby wells. Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition_Source: Indiana Geological Survey Enumerated_Domain: Enumerated_Domain_Value: Workover Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition: The status of "workover" does not refer to a completed well event. It is the equivalent of location for a new well. After the well has been completed, the status name "workover" is replaced by the status of the current event; a new event record is not entered. Attribute_Definition_Source: None Attribute_Domain_Values: Range_Domain: Range_Domain_Minimum: 10 Range_Domain_Maximum: 8429 Attribute: TD_Formation Attribute_Label: TD Formation Attribute_Definition: The geologic unit penetrated at the total depth of a well event. The term "formation" is used in the common petroleum industry vernacular and does not necessarily denote formal stratigraphic nomenclature. In the past, some IGS geologists would list a formation nearly reached as the TD formation, on the logic that anyone interested in a particular formation might also be interested in information about the overlying unit. Although this practice is no longer followed, the PDMS contains some wells treated in this way. No systematic effort has been made to correct this minor inconsistency. Generally the format LastName, FirstName or FirstNameInitial is used. Attribute_Definition_Source: None Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Operator_Name Attribute_Label: Operator Name Attribute_Definition: The name of the company that performs the drilling or the responsible party. There is a great deal of variety in the format and spelling of operator's names in the PDMS, a result of many things: operators changing their names, typographical errors made on the permits, data entry mistakes, no set standard, and so forth. This should be kept in mind when running a query based on the operator name. No systematic effort has been made to address this issue. Attribute_Definition_Source: None Attribute_Domain_Values: Unrepresentable_Domain Attribute: Well_Number Attribute_Label: Well Number Attribute_Definition: The well number is the number given by the operator to help identify the well; this is used exactly as it is reported for the well. No formatting rules are imposed and the format varies from operator to operator, and sometimes from well to well drilled by the same operator. Some well numbers are a numerals, and others include text. In some instances, the well number is given as "Name 1- Comm." for a communitized well (a well that pools or combines acreage from several leases), where a nearby well drilled by the same operator places the "Comm." with the lease name and lists the number as "1." An operator might have an "A" lease and "B" lease from the same landowner, and name his wells 1- A or 1A, and 1-B or 1B. B1 or A1 is also used. On some occasions, a new operator may start operations long after an earlier group of wells has been drilled, and the new wells are indicated by starting a lettered sequence: A-1, A-2. Other possibilities abound; new operators have been known to assign entirely new well numbers to existing wells.
