Indiana Metadata Builder Tool

Overview

A metadata builder tool has been developed by the Indiana Geological Survey and Northwest Indiana GIS Forum based on the Indiana Metadata Profile established by the Indiana GIS Initiative to facilitate the development of minimally compliant FGDC metadata. Modifications have been made to the Profile, which is to be used as a metadata worksheet, so that compliant metadata can be output with the information that is provided in the online builder form.

Print out and thoroughly read the instructions before beginning to enter the metadata information. The form is dynamic, so once you start, you will need to complete the process or all the information will be lost when you close your web browser. After completing the data entry into the form, a preview button will walk you through any validation checks that have not been met. After formatting corrections have been made, the preview button will then forward you to a sample output record. The web browser back button will allow you to return to the form to make changes. After changes have been made, the file will need to be saved to a local directory.

To complete the process, additional edits can be made directly to the stored text file. The author can add additional comments to existing fields that the Metadata Builder Tool did not allow and/or look into completing fully complaint metadata. It is also suggested that the completed text file be run through the USGS CNS and MP programs to correct any formatting problems. The file should then be ready for submission to the IndianaMap.

We would like to stress that fully compliant FGDC metadata would provide much more useful information. The minimally compliant format provided here starts the documentation process with minimum effort and will facilitate the sharing of data when the record is submitted to a metadata clearinghouse node.
