Post Processing

Follow these steps after drafting a metadata record to ensure consistency with the Federal Geospatial Data Committe (FGDC) requirements.

  1. Run an ASCII DOS TXT version of the metadata record through Chew and Spit (CNS) and review the "Leftover" file.
  2. After resolving any issues identified by CNS, run the file through the Metadata Parser (MP) and thoroughly review the "Error" file for a preliminary identification of missing CSDGM elements or formatting issues.
  3. Make necessary corrections to the original metadata record.
  4. Thoroughly review the metadata record to ensure that it fully documents the data set.
  5. Run the revised metadata text file through CNS and MP again. Make all necessary changes to the resulting text file. If needed, MP can also be used to convert the file to various formats, such as HTML, XML, etc.
  6. The metadata text file is now ready to be stored with the data set.
