After the metadata record has been reviewed for content to make sure it thoroughly documents the data set and has been run through CNS and MP to check for FGDC formatting, it is time to put the metadata to use. The metadata record should be stored with the data set. If the data set is not digital, for example slides, field samples, paper maps, etc., a printed copy can be stored with the data set or a digital metadata library can be established. If the data set could be of interest to the general GIS population, the metadata should also be submitted to a metadata clearinghouse.
The Northwest Indiana GIS Forum encourages its members to publish their metadata to the IndianaMap Data Clearinghouse. Cele Morris, metadata specialist with the Northwest Indiana Center for Data & Analysis at Indiana University Northwest, has been granted publication privileges to the Clearinghouse and can assist you with the metadata publication process. Contact Cele at cmorris@iun.edu.
The Indiana GIS Initiative has established the IndianaMap Data Clearinghouse housed at the IUPUI library. To learn how to submit a record to the clearinghouse go to the Indiana GIS Initiative Web site or contact Jenny Johnson at jennajoh@iupui.edu.
