Seismic Hazard

Many seismologists believe that a large
and damaging earthquake centered within
or
near the Lower Wabash Valley in
southwestern Indiana or southeastern
Illinois could occur at any time, because
geologic evidence clearly documents
prehistoric earthquakes of great intensity
in that area.

Mitigation of property damage and loss of
life in future earthquakes will require
education of the public, implementation
of appropriate emergency response
plans, and adoption of new seismic
design codes.

has its epicenter linked to the mapped
faults in Indiana.
