There is a science devoted to the discovery of economic accumulations of oil
and gas. A great deal of information about the geology and other characteristics
of Indiana's oil and gas fields is available from the Indiana
Geological Survey (keywords "oil" and "gas").
Reports about petroleum exploration, development, and production are published
annually by the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) as the Mineral
Economic Series (choose "Type" equal to "Mineral Economic Series"). Much
of the data held by the IGS is very specific, but other information is general
in nature and can be used by a variety of concerned parties, including landowners,
oil and gas professionals, and regulators. Contact the Publication
Sales office of the IGS (phone: 812-855-7636) for ordering or other information.
Additional information, including the current geometries of the individual fields
and maps of counties (at a scale of 1:68,000) showing the location of individual
wells, is available from the Subsurface
Geology Section of the IGS, John A. Rupp, Section Head, 611 North Walnut
Grove, Bloomington, IN 47405, phone: 812-855-5412.
