Maps are a form of communication that is
essential to understanding the current
status of demography, infrastructure, and
the environment. They are equally important
for tracking changes and planning for the
future.
Mapping is currently undergoing a technologic
revolution with the ongoing development of
computerized methods, referred to as
"geographic information systems," or "GIS."
Also, aerial and satellite imagery is rapidly
becoming more available at lower costs.
Such imagery permits much more accurate
and detailed mapping than in the past, and
electronically published maps are becoming
more dynamic, because they can be updated
with new information at frequent intervals.
