Almost all of the electricity used in Indiana is derived from coal. About 35 million tons of coal—worth around $700 million—were produced in Indiana in 2002, and much additional coal was imported from other states. Indiana ranks about seventh among the coal-producing states. More than 2,500 miners are employed in the state.
The Indiana Coal Council is a trade association that publishes an annual report titled “Indiana Coal Facts.” The report provides a variety of statistics related to the production, transportation, and usage of Indiana coal. This information is compiled from reports by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and the National Mining Association. Annual summaries of production are also provided by the Indiana Department of Labor, Indiana Bureau of Mines and Mining Safety.
