Coal

Much of the electricity that is used in Indiana
is generated from burning coal that is mined
within the state. In recent decades, the
production and utilization of Indiana's coal
has been greatly affected by a wide range of
environmental legislation, such as the Clean
Air Act.

The future of coal in Indiana depends
on the continued evolution of technology
that allows the cleaner burning of coal
and the reduction of atmospheric
emissions of sufur dioxide (acid rain),
nitrogen oxides (ozone), carbon
dioxide (global warming), and
mercury.
