Earthquake Strikes Southern Illinois

On April 18th at 5:36AM EDT a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Illinois. The epicenter was located approximately 5 miles northwest of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, 38 miles north-northwest of Evansville, Indiana, and 128 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The earthquake was felt throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky, and as far away as Missouri, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Southern Illinois earthquake felt in southwestern Indiana

A 3.6-magnitude earthquake occurred near Equality, Illinois about 45 miles west of Evansville, Indiana at about 4:50 p.m. EST Monday, January 2, 2006.

Earthquake Shakes Central Indiana

A magnitude 3.6 earthquake centered near Shelbyville in Shelby County sent tremors through the earth a few minutes after 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 12, 2004. No injuries were reported, but the quake did cause minor damage to some structures and served as a reminder that earthquakes, even large earthquakes, can happen in Indiana at any time, without any warning.

Kentucky earthquake felt in parts of southern Indiana

A 4.5-magnitude earthquake occurred near Bardwell in western Kentucky at about 7:30 a.m. EST Friday, June 6, 2003.

Alabama earthquake felt in Indiana

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake centered in northeastern Alabama occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on April 29, 2003. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake, which was felt in 11 states, including parts of southern Indiana, produced very limited damage.

Earthquake jolts southwestern corner of Indiana

Some residents of Posey County felt the jolt of a minor earthquake that occurred at 10:17 a.m. EST January 3, 2003. The National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, Colorado, assigned the quake a magnitude of 2.9 and located its epicenter at a point in Gallatin County, Illinois, less than one-half mile west of the Indiana state line. It was the third earthquake to be felt in southwestern Indiana in the last two years. The first was a magnitude 3.9 on December 7, 2000, centered near Evansville, and the second was a magnitude 5.0 on June 18, 2002, also centered near Evansville.

Earthquake Shakes Indiana!

An earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.0 centered a few miles west of Evansville and felt as far as West Virginia occurred at 12:37 p.m. EST June 18, 2002. It was the largest earthquake felt in Indiana since a magnitude-5.2 event struck a few miles west of Vincennes on June 10, 1987.
