From the 1970s through the middle 1980s, personnel of the Indiana Geological Survey conducted a program of mapping, sampling, and analyzing deposits of gob (coarse-grained refuse from coal preparation) and slurry (fine-grained refuse). Miller and Eggert (1982) indicate that a total of 519 samples were collected from 93 different drill sites associated with 14 coal-waste areas, and they provide statistical summaries of the data that were gathered. Some washability tests and grain-size analyses were performed in addition to chemical analyses, such as proximate and ultimate analyses. Based upon the entire sample set, Miller and Eggert (1982) estimated that the total tonnage of CSDs in Indiana at that time was about 40 to 50 million tons, which they estimated to represent about 20 million tons of recoverable coal.
In 2007, IGS personnel undertook the collection, compilation, and reevaluation of the unpublished paper records on which the report described above was based, as well as the creation of this GIS layer, showing the locations of samples collected by IGS personnel during the 1970s through the middle 1980s. Records for a total of 473 individual samples were recovered that have analytical results for sulfur (weight percent, as received), ash (weight percent, as received), and Btu per pound (as received, and moisture- and ash-free). Of the 473 individual samples, locations are available for 454 samples obtained from 93 different drill holes at 10 different mines. The locations are derived from unpublished paper maps in the IGS archives, unpublished reports (Harper and others, 1988, p. 35-37; Harper and others, 1989, p. 34-44), and published reports (Eggert and others, 1980, 1981). Selected analytical results (average values by drill hole) are included in this shapefile.
This GIS layer was produced in association with other layers showing locations of coal-preparation plants in Indiana (COAL_PREPARATION_PLANTS_IN.SHP), coal-slurry deposits in Indiana (COAL_SLURRY_DEPOSITS_IN.SHP), and locations of points where coal slurry was introduced (through pipelines or ditches) into disposal cells (COAL_SLURRY_DISCHARGE_IN.SHP).
