INTRODUCTION: In Cannelburg (Daviess County), Indiana, the vertical entrance-shaft of an abandoned underground mine collapsed in action by the U.S. Office of Surface Mining (OSM). After the homes that they attributed to subsidence of the mine workings that underlie much of the town. Because natural or man-made changes in hydrologic conditions can trigger mine subsidence, the Indiana Division of Reclamation (DOR) requested in February, 1990, that the Indiana Geological Survey Division (IGS) conduct an investigation of geologic and hydrologic conditions in the Cannelburg vicinity. Our investigations were comprised of: (1) geophysical (resistivity) surveys to delineate the mine's boundaries, (2) drilling, logging, sampling, and physical testing of geologic materials to identify conditions that might contribute to subsidence, and (3) installation of monitoring wells, hydrologic testing, and observation and statistical analysis of water levels in selected units. Our investigations were directed toward diagnosis of alleged subsidence at particular sites within Cannelburg, but rather toward characterization of overall conditions. We intend to continue monitoring the potentiometric level the Buckeye Mine into the indefinite future. Statistical analyses of water-level data are ongoing, so that statistical relationships cited in this report should be considered preliminary. I.G.S. personnel who served as principal investigators on the project include Denver Harper (Coal Geologist, Environmental Geology Section) and Edwin J. Hartke (Head of Environmental Section). N.K. Bleuer (Environmental Section) provided descriptions of unconsolidated deposits and provided guidance in the interpretation of gamma-ray logs. Personnel of the Geochemistry Section who assisted with the project include Tracy Branam and Margaret V. Ennis. Greg Olyphant, Indiana University (Geological Sciences Department), served as a principal investigator. Students of Indiana University who assisted in the project include A.M. Ebraheem, Timothy Eckert, and Yvonne Huff.
