Methods for Collecting and Analyzing Potable Ground Water

Careful planning is required in order to collect ground water for detailed chemical analysis. Special procedures have been developed to ensure that the water collected is representative of the water in the aquifer from which it came. All samples returned to the IGS Geochemistry laboratory are handled and analyzed using strict protocols approved by state and federal regulatory agencies.

The photos illustrate the water-collection and analytical methods used at the IGS for studying elevated fluoride in Indiana ground water. The work shown in this demonstration was federally funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and involved analysis of potable ground water from 24 domestic water supply wells in Dubois County. The NSF funding supported two Indiana high school students who were part of a group of 50 that were mentored at Indiana University while exploring careers in science. The study illustrated here was completed during the summer of 1994.
