Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP) - Phase II

PROJECT SUMMARY

The MRCSP is one of the seven partnerships selected by the U.S. Department of Energy aiming to determine the appropriate methodologies for capture and permanent storage of gases that can contribute to global warming.

The MRCSP consortium, led by Battelle, consists of state geological surveys, non-governmental organizations, universities, and private companies of seven states: Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This consortium has the goal of assessing the technical, economic, and public aspects of carbon sequestration within the region.

Phase II of MRCSP aims to build upon theoretical findings of the initial phase of the project, which identified large sequestration potential within the region. In Phase II, field validation in the form of small-scale CO2 injection tests will be conducted in deep geologic reservoirs to demonstrate and validate the effectiveness of the current technology.

One of the areas selected for small injection of CO2 into the Mount Simon saline reservoir has been preliminary located near the vicinity of Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio border. This project will include the injection of more than 3,000 tonnes of CO2 that will be followed by state-of-the-art monitoring technologies. From this investigation is expected to demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of geologic sequestration systems.

The term of this ongoing project is from October 2005 to September 2009.
