Many key questions remain regarding the character of Indiana coals including: where are the reserves of low-sulfur coal; how much coal is available for mining; what factors control the ash and moisture content; what geological characteristics influence the occurrence of methane in some of the coals; which coals generate favorable byproducts; and where are the coal beds that are best suited for carbon sequestration? Additionally, there may be unrecognized properties of Indiana coals that could be exploited by emerging industries such as biotechnology, electronics, ceramics, or chemistry. The objective of this project is to produce a comprehensive report for the Center for Coal Technology Research documenting the physical and chemical characteristics of Indiana coal, with a special emphasis on the properties that are unique to Indiana and that our state can capitalize upon.

The objectives of the original study, completed in 1994, were to update, compile, review, and interpret available literature, maps, and unpublished data concerning the gas potential of the New Albany Shale in the Illinois Basin. A basinwide cooperative approach using the expertise of scientists from the Illinois Basin Consortium, comprising the Illinois State Geological Survey, the Indiana Geological Survey, and the Kentucky Geological Survey, was employed to produce basinwide maps and stratigraphic cross sections relating to the gas potential.
Distribution and characterization of coal-slurry deposits in Indiana

Data from similar studies indicate that nitrate concentrations are often high; we believe this occurs because rainfall early and late in the growing season flush commercial fertilizers and animal waste before they can be used to promote plant growth. Through our monitoring program, we tracked effects that manure-application practices had on groundwater quality in the area. This assisted personnel of the IDEM Office of Land Quality to identify problem situations that may require modification of current rules and management practices.

Evaluation of Indiana Coals for Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)

Objective
This is a 2-year study to evaluate Indiana coals in IGCC systems. The project includes field work, sample collection, new analytical work, as well as integration of new and existing data for interpreting coal performance in an IGCC. We target major economic coal beds: the Danville, Hymera, Springfield, and Lower Block. Sampling locations are selected such that: 1) an adequate distribution of data points is provided using new and existing data, in order to map the degree variability of individual parameters important for IGCC; and 2) available coal mines and drilling locations are used to obtain fresh samples.

Since all metals precipitation systems need to have metal sludge excavated from them from time to time, it would be best for this metal sludge to be in a form that holds some commercial value. The objective of this study is to demonstrate methods for recovering valuable metals from acidic mine drainage by generating byproducts that have commercial value as raw materials for industry.

The detailed geologic framework and databases that this project will create are intended to document karst features and to provide data for the quantitative assessment of dimension and crushed stone resources in the county.

In collaboration with Purdue University, we created a GIS that depicts the seismic hazard for the entire state of Indiana. The final product includes stochastic acceleration maps for various earthquake scenarios along with layers indicating the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) soil classification types (for example, amplification effects as well as liquefaction potential).
