Strat Pick (Stratigraphic Pick)

A Stratigraphic Pick is a determination or estimation of the depth of a specific, generally recognizable horizon in the subsurface. It is loosely equivalent to the "Formation Top." The Pick usually corresponds to a formally recognized formation contact between Geologic Units, although the term is also in the PDMS for certain points in a borehole, especially for a well's Total Depth.

Strat Picks have been entered by many IGS geologists over the years at the Indiana Geological Survey. We have been particularly fortunate to have had the services of a single expert on Indiana stratigraphy, John B. Droste (Professor Emeritus, Indiana University, Department of Geological Sciences) make, or evaluate, the picks for nearly every well in Indiana with a geophysical log since the beginning of time. Additionally, he has correlated and picked tops for a large number of wells for which only samples, or even old drillers logs, are the only available information.
