ASBOG® Examinations

Persons applying for licensure as a professional geologist in the state of Indiana are required to pass a Board accepted examination. The ASBOG® examination is given twice annually. Applications and fees for examinations are due on or before the deadlines listed below.

All fees should be made payable to Indiana University. Please use the Application to take the ASBOG Exam form to register and remit fees for the exam.

The examination will be administered in two parts on each date given. The Fundamentals of Geology portion will begin at 8:00 a.m. on the dates above. The Practice of Geology portion will begin at 1:00 p.m. on the dates above. All exams will be given on the Indiana University Bloomington campus unless otherwise noted.

    Presented by the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) to help geologists prepare for the ASBOG national examination, this brief handbook includes information about state licensing requirements, descriptions of examinations, and sample questions and answers.   • Review of Practical Geology short course
    This course is presented by the Kentucky Society of Professional Geologists and the American Institute of Professional Geologists to provide a technical review of selected topics emphasized on current professional geology examinations, such as the Professional Geologist examinations administered by the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG). The course is intended for working geologists preparing to sit for professional examinations, and may also be of interest to graduate and upper-level undergraduate students preparing to sit for examinations, and even professional geologists wishing to acquire a refresher on selected geological topics.   • ASBOG exam preparation course
    REG REVIEW, Inc. of California conducts a course for preparing midwest geologists for the ASBOG exam. For more information, go to the REG REVIEW, Inc. Web site.
  • ASBOG exam preparation course
    Florida Short Courses has been presenting preparation courses for professional geologist exams since 1995, including a review for the ASBOG exam, which has been presented for the past five years. While the course is not university affiliated, it is taught by two university professors who have been professional geologists for many years.
